Broos Blames South Africa’s World Cup 2026 Exit To Lack Of Speed, Power

South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed disappointment after their 1-0 round of 32 loss to Canada at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

With both sides making their first-ever appearance in the knockout phase, the game appeared to be heading for extra time before Eustaquio broke South African hearts with a clinical hit from just outside the area.

Reacting after the game, Broos admitted that Bafana Bafana lacked the power, speed, and 1-v-1 quality of modern football but commended the historic campaign.

Despite the heartbreaking stoppage-time defeat, Broos reflected highly on the tournament, stating fans could be satisfied that South Africa made it to the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in 24 years.

“First of all, it’s clever to make decisions when you are disappointed. On the other side, I think we lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team.

“We lost a lot of duels, man against man, and the speed in our team, not only running speed but also the speed of execution.

“Football is more than techniques; it sometimes requires power and speed. And when you don’t have it in your team and you play against a team that has it, then it’s an issue. That was the big quality of the team.

“We had a difficult game, but on the other side, when you look at it, we can be satisfied with what we did because it was 24 years ago South Africa could qualify for the World Cup.”

Canada, playing in Los Angeles despite being co-hosts, after failing to win their group, will now face the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston in the last 16 on July 4, as South Africa’s World Cup adventure comes to an end.
